Seoul: Unseeded Anthony Sinisuka Ginting pulled off the biggest surprise of the day on Saturday to upset top-seeded men’s player Son Wan-Ho of Korea in the Korea Open semi-final.
The 20 year-old Ginting dropped the first set 16-21, but was completely dominant over the World No. 1 Son Wan-Ho in the second and third sets, winning 21-18, 21-13 as the local favorite was struggling to get into position to hit his signature style of play by using his steadiness and stamina to wear down Ginting. Ginting will take on compatriot Jonathan Christie in the final.
After winning the gold medal at the 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games last month, 20-year-old unseeded Jonatan Christie also produced a stunning semi-final victory over No. 7 seed Wang Tzu Wei on Saturday, seeing off the Taiwanese 21-13, 21-17 in 32 minutes.
In men’s doubles, No. 2 seeds Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo of Indonesia battled through a tough semi-final against No. 3 seeds Takeshi Kamura/Keigo Sonoda of Japan 21-18, 17-21, 21-16 in 51 minutes. Gideon/Sukamuljo will take on No. 1 seeds Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen of Denmark in the final.
