Tai Tzu Ying wins the 2017 Hong Kong Open title.

Tai Tzu Ying defends title, beats PV Sindhu in Hong Kong final

Hong Kong: Defending champion – Taiwan’s World No. 1 women’s singles player Tai Tzu Ying won her third Hong Kong Open title and fifth Super Series of the year in defeating No. 2 seed India’s P.V. Sindhu 21-18, 21-18 on Sunday.

Tai improved her career meeting record against the Olympic silver medalist and World No. 3 Sindhu to 7-3 and also cemented her place as world No.1 after the Hong Kong Open victory that lasted 45 minutes.

“Sindhu was quick and fast on the attack, and it’s difficult to score points against her because she is much taller than me. Therefore, I played very patiently in the final,” said Tai after the match.

Talking to reporters about her performance this year, Tai was relatively happy with the 2017 season.

“It’s been a good year for me. Overall, I’ve been pretty consistent, and quite satisfied with my results and looking forward to an even better 2018,” said Tai.

“Frankly, I don’t have to win all tournaments. I think reaching the quarter-final or semi-finals in any tournaments are considered good results.”

“It’s going to be hard to win so many titles next year, especially I need to focus on the BWF World Championships and the Asia Games.”

In women’s doubles, No. 1 seeds Chen Qingchen/Jia Yifan of China overcame a stiff challenge from Indonesian pair Greysia Polii/Apriyani Rahayu 14-21, 21-16, 21-15 in 71 minutes to take home the Hong Kong Open trophy.

Meanwhile, No. 5 seeds Zheng Siwei/Huang Yaqiong of China outlasted Mathias Christiansen/Christinna Pedersen of Denmark 21-15, 21-13 to win the mixed doubles title.
