Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei Progress to Malaysia Open Second Round

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s mixed doubles pair, Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei, brought joy to the Malaysian badminton team by becoming the first Malaysian representatives to secure a victory on the opening day of the 2025 Malaysia Open.

Fresh off their runner-up finish at the BWF World Tour Finals in Hangzhou, China, last month, Chen/Toh showed no signs of slowing down. The world number five pair cruised past Taiwan’s Wu Hsuan Yi and Yang Chu Yun in straight sets, winning 21-8, 21-9 in just 27 minutes at the Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil.

Their victory was a much-needed boost for Malaysia after seven other representatives were eliminated in the first round of the tournament.

According to Chen, the duo’s approach of treating every opponent seriously has been key to their success.

“We focus on our strengths and try not to overthink when we step onto the court,” said Chen Tang Jie. “In a BWF Super 1000 event, every match is tough, and we give our all in every game.”

Their professionalism and determination were evident as they dominated their opponents to secure a spot in the second round.

Unfortunately, it was a tough day for other Malaysian players, with several high-profile exits, including singles player Leong Jun Hao, men’s doubles pair Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin, women’s doubles pairs Pearly Tan/M. Thinaah and Go Pei Kee/Teoh Mei Xing, as well as mixed doubles pairs Hoo Pang Ron/Cheng Su Yin, Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing, and Wong Tien Ci/Lim Chiew Sien.

Next, Chen/Toh will face Taiwan’s Lu Ming Che and Hung En Tzu on Thursday in a bid to reach the quarterfinals.
