Sony Dwi Kuncoro wins Chinese Taipei GP finals

Taipei: Although Sony Dwi Kuncoro is not young and strong as before, the 2004 Athens Olympic bronze medalist proved age no barrier as he rolled back the years to beat Wang Tzu Wei of Taiwan, 21-13, 21-15 to lift the Chinese Taipei GP men’s singles title on Sunday.Sony Dwi Kuncoro poses on the podium with Wang Tzu Wei. “I won all my matches with straight-sets in Taipei, therefore, I am not feeling tired at the finals,” said Kuncoro.

Sony used his net shots to move from defence to offence on several critical moments during the match.

“I started pressuring Wang from the very beginning of the game. I lost to Wang at Swiss Open in March, my condition was not good at that time.” added Kuncoro.

In men’s doubles, Malaysia’s independent players Hoon Thien How/Lim Khim Wah lost to No. 1 seeds Gideon Markus Fernaldi/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo of Indonesia in straight sets, 12-21 and 8-21 in only 27 minutes.

In addition to the men’s singles and the men’s doubles title, Indonesia also swept the women’s doubles title with Anggia Shitta Awanda/Mahadewi Istirani Ni Ketut defeated Shiho Tanaka/Koharu Yonemoto of Japan with 21-19, 21-14; while Ronald Alexander/Melati Daeva Oktaviani come out on top in a thriller 3-set match against Chang Ko-Chi/Chang Hsin Tien of Taiwan, lifting the mixed doubles title with a 21-18, 25-27, 21-15 victory.

The only category that didn’t fall into the hands of Indonesian team came from women’s singles, where Lee Jang Mi of South Korea beat compatriot Kim Hyo Min 21-16, 21-16 to win the women’s singles title.
