Kuala Lumpur: Technical director of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) Morten Frost Hansen admitted it’s hard to find another player with that capability of Lee Chong Wei, but BAM has started building a talent pipeline for the future of badminton in Malaysia.
Nevertheless, Morten Frost also said it’s hard to evaluate the depth of BAM’s talent pipeline as they’ll have to strive to meet the performance goals for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
“We cannot produce another Lee Chong Wei, but the players must have their own flavor and can maximize their own uniqueness. Just like Denmark, although they do not have a World Champion, but they were able to produce the Olympic bronze medalist, Viktor Axelsen.”
When asked about the prospect of BAM coaches, Morten Frost said he could not provide much detail about the topic until the BAM incentives ceremony for Rio Olympics Games medalists on Saturday.
“We’ve discussed many issues in the Coaching and Training (C&T) meeting, and we will reveal the results on Saturday,” said Frost.
“I feel like we need to adjust the team and type of training, although I’ve said that we don’t change a winning team.”
He also reiterated BAM would send the best team to the Japan Open Super Series which will be held from Sept 20 to Sept 25.
