Beng Hong heads a triple treat for Malaysia

KOTA KINABALU: Second seed Kuan Beng Hong picked up his first international Open men’s singles title yesterday, beating Sukma (Malaysia Games) gold medallist Chong Wei Feng in the final of the Malaysia International Challenge at the Likas Sports Complex here.

Beng Hong maintained his good track record against the national back-up players and top seed, winning the match 21-7, 21-15 in just 33 minutes.

In the semi-finals on Saturday, Beng Hong had beaten Rho Ye-wook of South Korea 21-11, 21-11 while Wei Feng defeated Indonesia’s Andreas Adityawarman 18-21, 21-13, 21-12.

It was also a repeat outcome in the men’s doubles final as second seeds Lin Woon Fui-Goh Wei Shem overcame top seeds Gan Teik Chai-Ong Jian Guo 21-19, 21-18.

Woon Fui and Teik Chai had split partnerships to team up with youngsters Wei Shem and Jian Guo respectively for the Malaysia International Challenge. The two new pairings will be retained for the Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur in January.

There were more cheers for Malaysia in the mixed doubles with fourth seeds Mohd Lufti Zaim Abdul Khalid-Lim Yin Loo beating top seeds Chrisnanta Danny Bawa-Vanessa Neo of Singapore 14-21, 21-17, 21-19 in a 61-minute battle.

Indonesia took the women’s singles title through Feby Angguni while South Korea won the women’s doubles through Bae Seung-hee-Park Sun-young.

Men’s singles: Kuan Beng Hong (Mas) bt Chong Wei Feng (Mas) 21-7, 21-15.

Men’s doubles: Lin Woon Fui-Goh Wei Shem (Mas) bt Gan Teik Chai-Ong Jian Guo (Mas) 21-19, 21-18.

Women’s singles: Febby Angguni (Ina) bt Bae Seung-hee (Kor) 22-20, 21-17.

Women’s doubles: Bae Seung-hee-Park Sun-young (Kor) bt Kim Mi-young-Jang Ye-na (Kor) 13-21, 21-15, 21-5.

Mixed doubles: Mohd Lufti Zaim Abdul Khalid-Lim Yin Loo (Mas) bt Chrisnanta Danny Bawa-Vanessa Neo (Sin) 14-21, 21-17, 21-19.
