Wang delights home fans to win Hong Kong Open (pic)

HONG KONG: Unseeded home favourite Wang Chen defeated China’s Olympic silver medallist Xie Xingfang to win the women’s final of the Yonex-Sunrise Hong Kong Open Super Series 2008.

Wang, born in Shanghai but representing Hong Kong, won 21-16, 10-21, 21-10 against the world ranked number five Xie, but is unlikely to be back next year to defend her title.
The 32-year-old has said this would be her last appearance here before retirement. Although she has not said exactly when she will give up the game, she was adamant she will not be back.

“I feel close to retirement and every match is one step closer to that, so I’m enjoying the games more than before because of that.”

Wang had a capacity crowd at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium firmly behind her from the off, propelling her to winning the first game 21-16.

But the second game was a different story, with Xie, the fourth seed, winning 21-10 after Wang hit into the net.

Wang edged ahead 16-7 in the deciding game after a compelling rally when Xie failed to lift a drop shot over the net.

A dispirited and weary-looking Xie went wide to set up match point for Wang, but then Wang also went wide.

Xie, who comes from nearby Guangdong, saw any late comeback foiled when she shot into the net to bring the partisan crowd to its feet.

“Physically I have not been so good since the Beijing Olympics,” said a disappointed Xie afterwards.
