Kuala Lumpur: The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has announced the draws for the 2022 Thomas and Uber Cup Finals which will take place in Bangkok, Thailand, from May 8 to May 15, 2022.
Kento Momota of Japan and Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia who crossed swords on October 14, 2021, at the 2020 Thomas & Uber Cup Finals Group D tie (the event was postponed from 2020 to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic), will likely meet each other again as Japan and Malaysia were once again drawn together in Group D of the 2022 edition alongside England and New Zealand.
If both teams decided to field their best men’s singles in the 2022 Thomas Cup Group D tie, that would be Kento Momota and Lee Zii Jia’s fifth meeting in the last 6 months. Both met at the Sudirman Cup – Group D tie on September 30, 2021, where Momota beat Lee 21-18, 21-10. Lee then edged past Momota two days later in the Sudirman Cup semi-finals 22-20, 21-19.
Two weeks after the 2021 Sudirman Cup semi-finals, Momota saw off Lee at the 2020 Thomas Cup Group D tie with 15-21, 21-12, 23-21 (October 14, 2021) before Lee beat Momota at 2022 All England quarter-finals 21-7, 13-21, 21-11 (March 18, 2022).
The Malaysian men’s team and Japan are favorites (in Group D) to advance to the knockout stage.
Meanwhile, Malaysia’s women’s team had received a tough draw against Thailand, Denmark, and Egypt in the Group C of the 2022 Uber Cup draw. It’s going to be challenging for the Malaysian women’s team to make the knockout stage as the 2020 Uber Cup quarter-finalist Denmark and semi-finalist Thailand have more firepower in both the women’s singles and women’s doubles categories.
