Morten Frost optimistic about Malaysia’s Thomas Cup Finals chances

Kuala Lumpur: Despite concerns from several former national coaches that sending a young squad to the Badminton Asian Team Championships (BATC) in India next month would jeopardize Malaysia’s chances of qualifying for the Thomas Cup Finals slated to be held in Kunshan, China from May 15-22; Technical Director of Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), Morten Frost Hansen however remained optimistic about his team’s capabilities of making the prestigious biennial Thomas Cup finals.Malaysia is going to go through growing pains when they have such young players for BATC, but BadmintonPlanet.com agreed with Morten Frost, we should all look ahead to the future.

Lee Chong Wei/Vivian Hoo, Goh Jin Wei advance to Perak Open finals

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysian badminton superstar, Lee Chong Wei, and his mixed doubles partner Vivian Hoo, both playing equally well to stun the top seeds Tan Aik Quan/Lai Pei Jing 21-9, 21-12 in the semi-finals of Perak Open on Wednesday.

Lee Chong Wei and Vivian Hoo are no strangers to teaming up together, having taken home the 2012 Maybank National Circuit Selangor Open title after defeated No. 1 mixed double in Malaysia, Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying 21-15, 27-25. Lee/Hoo will take on second seeds Tan Chee Tean/Shevon Lai in the final on Thursday. Tan Chee Tean/Shevon Lai won a hard-fought three-set semi-finals against Tan Kian Meng/Peck Yen Wei with 21-13, 15-21, 21-9 in 49 minutes.May be Lee Chong Wei should seriously consider playing in doubles after the 2016 Olympics. Perak Open: Daren Liew ousted in quarters, Lee Chong Wei/Vivian Hoo ease to semis

Perak: Defending champion Daren Liew took the Perak Open men’s singles match all the way to its limit only to fall short after being beaten in the quarter-final by Soong Joo Ven on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old fourth seed went down 22-20, 13-21, 9-21 to Soong Joo Ven, who is ranked No. 112 in the world.Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin plays relentlessly and aggressively in the Perak Open quarter-finals.

National back-up shuttlers in danger of being booted out (pic)

KUALA LUMPUR: Some of the back-up shuttlers are in danger of being booted out of the national badminton team.

 
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) will be conducting an open selection trials at the Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara from Jan 20-24 and all the states have been asked to send their best players to challenge the back-up shuttlers.
 
Talent search programme chief David Wee said the trials would be closely monitored by the national coaches.
 
“We are trying out this open selection trials for the first time. It is a transparent way of selecting the players for the national team and we hope that the best will get in. If a state player can beat the national back-up player, he or she will be invited to join the national team and the back-up player will be dropped,” said David.
