Kuala Lumpur – Malaysia’s national men’s doubles coach, Herry Iman Pierngadi, has thrown down the gauntlet to his top two pairs: world No. 2 Aaron Chia–Soh Wooi Yik and world No. 7 Man Wei Chong–Tee Kai Wun. The challenge? Win a title at either the upcoming Japan Open or China Open in July.
Known affectionately as the “Fire Dragon” for his passionate coaching style, Herry expressed strong confidence in both pairs, citing their sharp form and solid preparation as key factors.
“Personally, I really hope we can clinch one of those titles,” said Herry following a training session at the Badminton Association of Malaysia (ABM) headquarters.
As far as tournament readiness goes, Herry confirmed that both pairs are in peak physical and mental condition. “Training has gone smoothly, and the players are in great shape,” he added.
Aaron and Wooi Yik are enjoying an exceptional run, having captured three major titles this year—the Badminton Asia Championships (BAC) in Ningbo, China; the Thailand Open in May; and most recently, the Singapore Open.
Meanwhile, Wei Chong and Kai Wun have also thrived under Herry’s leadership. The duo secured the Malaysia Masters crown and reached the semifinals at the Indonesia Open, signaling their upward momentum.
The Japan Open (BWF Super 750) is scheduled for July 15–20, followed by the prestigious China Open (BWF Super 1000) from July 22–27.
Amidst their rising momentum, rumors swirled online that Herry was attempting to lure back one of his former Indonesian protégés, Mohammad Ahsan. Herry, however, was quick to dismiss the speculation.
“Ahsan just contacted me and asked to meet up. It’s normal for former players to reconnect. We simply met for a meal and had a casual chat. There’s nothing more to it,” he clarified.
As Malaysia’s top men’s doubles gear up for two of the season’s most competitive events, all eyes will be on whether Herry’s challenge turns into podium finishes.
