Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s national men’s doubles head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi, affectionately known as “Fire Dragon”, has a special wish for the 2025 BWF World Badminton Championships in Paris — for his players to win the world title as a gift to Malaysia on Independence Day.

The final of this year’s championships is set to take place on August 31, which coincides with Malaysia’s 68th Merdeka Day celebration. Herry believes the symbolic timing could provide an extra spark of motivation for his players.

“Yes, it’s a source of motivation — especially for Malaysian players. Winning the world title on  Independence Day would be an unforgettable gift to the nation,” Herry told reporters after training at the BAM Academy.

“It would be one of the best gifts the players could offer. So yes, I think it adds another layer of motivation this time around. Personally, I’d love to see an all-Malaysian final — but let’s take it one step at a time.”

🏸 Malaysia Fields Four Men’s Doubles Pairs in Paris

Malaysia will be represented by four men’s doubles pairs:

• Aaron Chia / Soh Wooi Yik (World No. 2, 2022 World Champions)

• Man Wei Chong / Tee Kai Wun (World No. 7)

• Wan Arif Wan Junaidi / Yap Roy King (World No. 22, debutants)

• Nur Izzuddin Rumsani / Goh Sze Fei (World No. 3, professional pair)

The pressure is high, but so is the potential. With the final scheduled on such a significant national day, the motivation could elevate performances beyond expectation.

🇲🇾 Former Indonesian Coach Still Wary of His Homeland

Herry, who once coached Indonesia’s national team, said he won’t be underestimating the strength of his native country’s shuttlers.

“Indonesia definitely has a chance. We can’t take their players lightly — I still remember their playing style quite well,” he admitted.

“But it’s not just Indonesia. We also need to pay close attention to Korea, China, and Denmark. All of them are capable of challenging for the title.”
