Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s national badminton squad is intensifying its efforts to craft a solid lineup to reclaim the Thomas Cup title in 2026—a title they have not won since their iconic victory in 1992.
According to Rexy Mainaky, Director of National Doubles Coaching, the door to glory is still open. But to seize the opportunity, the team must get everything right—from strategy and preparation to mental readiness.
“Our chance is always there when the Thomas Cup comes around. But we must find the right rhythm and build a more solid team—especially in the singles department,” said Rexy.
“It’s not that our doubles are perfect either. We need to strengthen both areas. Planning must start now if we want a truly solid team ready by then.”
Team Unity Will Be Key to Thomas Cup Victory
While Malaysia boasts world-class players in both singles and doubles, Rexy believes that true team synergy, not just individual brilliance, will be the deciding factor in a team competition like the Thomas Cup.
“Every discipline has strong individual players. But how do we perform as a united team? That’s what we must focus on starting now.
“Talking about opportunities without taking action won’t bring us the title. We’ll only keep dreaming of Thomas Cup success.”
A Golden Opportunity in Denmark 2026?
Rexy’s comments came in response to Malaysian badminton legend Rashid Sidek, who expressed confidence that the 2026 Thomas Cup in Horsens, Denmark, presents the best chance yet for Malaysia to reclaim the title after more than three decades.
Rashid cited the team’s stability and depth, especially with top-tier singles players Lee Zii Jia and Leong Jun Hao, along with three elite men’s doubles pairs:
