Chaotic Scenes at Madrid Championships

Madrid's ability to organise major sporting events has been thrown into question after chaotic scenes on the penultimate day of the world badminton championships on Saturday.

Spectators and members of the international media complained about the failure of organisers to allow people to enter the installations until a few minutes before matches were scheduled to start.

Live television and radio broadcasters were left standing in the street and unable to set up their equipment, while while security staff man-handled journalists who voiced complaints about their behaviour.

WORLD number one Lee Chong Wei crashed out of the World Championships when he fell 20-22, 21-12,18-21 to Chinas Bao Chunlai in a dramatic quarter-final match yesterday.

Malaysias challenge in the mens singles also came to an end yesterday when Mohd Hafiz Hashim fell to another Chinese, second seed Lin Dan 21-10, 21-9.

Top seed Lee crashes out

Madrid, Sep 23 (Xinhua) World No. 1 shuttler Lee Chongwei of Malaysia lost to Chinese Bao Chunlai in the mens singles quarterfinals of the World Championships here.

The 23-year-old player saved one match point before going down 20-22, 21-12, 18-21 to Bao Friday. The Chinese had never beaten Chongwei in their previous six encounters.

WORLD number one Lee Chong Wei led all three Malaysian men's singles players into the third round of the World Championships at the Palacio de Deportes in Madrid yesterday. 

After receiving a first-round bye, Chong Wei opened his campaign with a 21-18, 21-14 win over German Bjoern Joppien.

Hallam & Hughes advance in Madrid (pic)

England's Tracey Hallam reached the third round of the World Badminton Championships with a comfortable win over Ella Karachkova in Madrid.

The 11th seed took just 29 minutes to beat the Russian 10th seed 21-9 21-8 and will now meet Monthila Meemek of Thailand in the last 16.

Scotland's Susan Hughes also advanced with a 21-15 21-12 win over 15th seed Hwang Hye-youn of South Korea.

Hallam won Commonwealth gold in Melbourne earlier this year
