Lee Chong Wei’s win not enough to carry Malaysia into Sudirman Cup semis

Gold Coast: Malaysia fell short of their goal of reaching the Sudirman Cup semi-finals as they lost to Japan 1-3 in the quarter-finals on Friday.

The evening started with Rio Olympic silver medalists Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong bowing out to Takeshi Kamura/Keigo Sonoda 17-21, 21-16, 11-21.

Soniia Cheah then came up against Nozomi Okuhara of Japan in the women’s singles match, which in truth, both were not quite in the same class. The combative Okuhara put on a magnificent display as she rolled past the Cheah 21-11, 21-9 to clinch the second point for Japan.

As usual, Lee Chong Wei was unstoppable against Kenta Nishimoto in the men’s singles match as he helped Malaysia stayed in the contest by beating the Japanese 21-15, 21-13 in 45 minutes.

Nonetheless, Malaysia’s women’s doubles pair of Vivian Hoo/Woon Khe Wei loss their 10th career meeting against World No. 1 Misaki Matsutomo/Ayaka Takahashi with a 7-21 and 14-21 defeat to conclude the tie.

Japan will play China in the semi-finals on Saturday, while South Korea will take on Thailand in the other semi-finals.
