Kuala Lumpur: The No. 2 guy in Badminton World Federation (BWF) – Gustavo Salazar Delgado, is allegedly on the run after being involved in the chain of corruption activities that involved Odebrecht, the Brazilian construction giant in his native country of Peru.

Delgado joined the BWF council in 2007, both he and BWF President Poul-Erik Høyer were unchallenged and were re-elected to retain their positions at the badminton’s world-governing body for a second successive term (from 2017 to 2021) in February this year.

Delgado was an active badminton player in Peru. He won 19 Peruvian singles and doubles titles in the 1980s, and 1990s before becoming a businessman.

Last Sunday, a judge has ordered that the 52-year-old Delgado to be placed in pre-trial detention for 18 months before the hearing into the case. His was one of the key figures that involved in setting up the money laundering network for former Regional Governor of Cusco – Jorge Acurio. Acurio, who is himself in prison, is accused of having received a US$1.25 million bribe to award a road building contract to Odebrecht.

Delgado’s lawyer has declared that Delgado is on his way back to Lima and that he will most probably collaborate with the judiciary in providing more information about the incident.
