Beijing: After few month worth of will he, won’t he conversations surrounding China’s men’s doubles legend Fu Haifeng, the two-time Olympic champion has finally decided to retire from the sport of badminton.
In an official news posted by Badminton World Federation (BWF) last Friday, it said: “Fu Haifeng, one of the legends of world badminton, has called time on his career.”
Fu Haifeng walked away from the sport temporarily after winning the 2016 Rio Olympic men’s doubles title. However, he still occasionally surfaced in tournaments such as the 2017 Malaysia Open, 2017 Asia Championships, and the 2017 Sudirman Cup.
The 33-year-old left-hander retired as a two-time Olympic champion (with Cai Yun in 2012 and with Zhang Nan in 2016), a 4-time World Championships winner (2006, 2009, 2010 and 2011). He also set the previous world smash record of 332 km/h (206 mph) on June 3, 2005 in the Sudirman Cup in Beijing.
