Sydney: Malaysia’s mixed doubles scratch pair Chan Peng Soon/Cheah Yee See earned a quarterfinal berth at the 2017 Australian Open badminton tournament after outlasting Indonesian qualifiers Hendra Tandjaya/Putri Sekartaji 21-10, 21-5 on Thursday.
On Friday, Chan/Cheah will meet No. 7 seeds Praveen Jordan and Debby Susanto of Indonesia, after the Indonesian duo beat Singapore’s Terry Hee Yong Kai/Tan Wei Han 21-6, 21-12 in the second round.
Meanwhile, Malaysia’s young men’s doubles pair – Ong Yew Sin/Teo Ee Yi remain undefeated in Sydney as they needed only 16 minutes to trash Indonesian young pair of Saputra Alvindo/Ferdinand Sinarta Surabkti 21-9 and 21-7 in the Australian Open second round.
Ong/Teo are set to play Liu Cheng/Zhang Nan of China after the unseeded pair shocked No. 7 seed Huang Kaixiang/Wang Yilyu 21-16 and 21-14 in another second round match.
The Indonesia/Malaysia men’s doubles combo of Tan Boon Heong/Hendra Setiawan also advanced to the final eight after overcoming No. 6 seeds Lee Jhe-Huei/Lee Yang of Taiwan 21-17 and 21-11 to take on Takuto Inoue/Yuki Kaneko of Japan on Friday.
Malaysia’s challenge in men’s singles and women’s singles, however fizzled out after Zulfadli Zulkiffli and Soniia Cheah were knocked out by their second round opponents respectively.
