Selvaduray Kisona beats Lee Ying Ying to win Malaysia International Series

Putrajaya: The Malaysian team that featured young players such as Selvaduray Kisona, Lee Ying Ying, Lee Jian Yi/Lim Zhen Ting at the Malaysia Open International Series, have won three of the five categories in Putrajaya on Sunday.

19-year-old Selvaduray Kisona who won the Victor International Series on May 14th, clawed back from a game down to upset top seed Lee Ying Ying 16-21, 21-15, 21-17 at the Complex Neighborhood Presint 11 stadium. Kisona who also won the Malaysia National Under-21 Championships last March, brought home USD $600 in prize money after her triumph.

“Winning two titles this year have given me a lot of confident. I have overcome challenges of all kinds and have learned from failure,” said Kisona after her victory.

In men’s singles, Malaysia’s Cheam June Wei squandered an 8 points lead in the first set as unseeded Loh Kean Yew of Singapore rallied from behind to win the first set 21-19. The World No. 307 Singaporean who is still serving in Singapore’s National Service, dethroned a seemingly demoralized Cheam to beat the No. 11 seed Malaysian 21-14 in the second set.

This was Loh’s second international title since claiming Singapore International Series in 2014.

“I haven’t play competitively for a long time, and I didn’t feel I was under pressure to prove myself. That’s why I was able to play my own game to win the title,” said the 20-year-old Loh.

Meanwhile, Malaysia’s No. 1 seeds Lee Jian Yi/Lim Zhen Ting defeated compatriots Chen Tang Jie/Soh Wooi Yik 24-22, 21-19 in the men’s doubles final while women’s doubles pair Soong Fie Cho/Tee Jing Yi beat Kittipak Dubthuk/Natcha Saengchote of Thailand 21-16, 21-17 to clinch the women’s doubles title.

The No. 1 seeds Yantoni Edy Saputra/Marsheilla Gischa Islami of Indonesia outlasted India’s K. Nandagopal/Mahima Aggarwal 21-19, 21-9 in 25 minutes for the mixed doubles title.
