Taipei: Women’s singles World No. 1 Tai Tzu Ying of Taiwan, who decided to skip the prestigious BWF World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, instead, decided to play at the 2017 Universiade Games that was held in Taiwan, has won two gold medals in the badminton event.
Tai won her second gold medal at the Taipei 2017 Summer Universiade on Tuesday by defeating World No. 25 Lee Jang-mi of South Korea, whom she beat at an Asian championship final four 21-8 and 21-16 earlier this year.
At the Universiade, the result was similar, Tai overwhelmed Lee in the first game 21-9 and the second game 21-13, clinching Taiwan’s 24th gold medal at the event.
For Tai, who had settled for silver in the 2013 Universiade and bronze in 2015, winning the gold in front of home crowd was particularly amazing.
“I’ve won the bronze, silver and this time gold medal at Universiade, mission accomplished and no more regrets,” said Tai.
Prior to the women’s singles event, Tai also led the Taiwanese team to gold by crushing Japan 3-0 for victory in the mixed team event.
In addition to the women’s singles and mixed team gold, Taiwan also came out on top in men’s singles through Wang Tzu-Wei, women’s doubles gold by Hsu Ya-Ching and Wu Ti-jung, and Wang Chi-lin/Lee Chia-hsin also won the mixed doubles gold for Taiwan.
The host country only missed out in men’s doubles, where Lee Yang/Lee Jhe-Huei lost to Tamate Katsuki/Kenya Mitsuhashi of Japan in the semi-finals.
