China, Malaysia & Indonesia record comfortable wins at World Junior Championships

Yogjakarta: China, the defending champions at Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Junior Championships, has the advantage in Group G after two wins in the mixed team event on Monday.

China put in a dominant performance for Hong Kong with a 5-0 victory in their first tie, while receiving a walkover from Algeria in their second tie. China will face Denmark on Tuesday morning, and will meet Chinese Taipei on Wednesday.

Malaysia, runners-up last year, were with their top girl Goh Jin Wei and managed to end the opening tie against Armenia 5-0.

The 2016 World Junior Girls’ Singles Champion Goh Jin Wei, who readjusted her start to the season after suffering a recurrence of an ankle injury, had an easy passage when she eased past Mane Stepanyan 21-5, 21-2 in 12 minutes.

Man Wei Chong/Tan Sueh Jeou and Leong Jun Hao had earlier beaten their opponents in mixed doubles and boys’ singles respectively.

Malaysia then wrapped up the tie through Chang Yee Jun/Ng Eng Cheong and Pearly Koong Le Tan/Toh Ee Wei in men’s doubles and women’s doubles. The Malaysian team will play New Zealand on Tuesday.

There was no samba dance for the Brazilian team as the hosts Indonesia picked up a 5-0 victory against the South American nation. The Indonesians will take on Mongolia in the last Group H1 tie on Tuesday.
