Hong Kong: Women’s singles World No. 1 Tai Tzu Ying of Taiwan had to dig deep to see off South Korea’s No. 3 seed Sung Ji-hyun in the Hong Kong Open semi-finals on Saturday, coming from a set down to beat Sung 21-9, 18-21, 21-7 in 52 minutes.
Tai who had previous won the Hong Kong Open title in 2014 and 2016, will face P.V. Sindhu of India in the final.
The No. 2 seed Sindhu however was able to dispatch 22-year-old Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand with her aggressive play style at the US$400,000 Hong Kong Open semi-finals, notching up a 21-17, 21-17 win in 43 minutes.
In women’s doubles, Indonesia’s unseeded Greysia Polii/Apriyani Rahayu saved a match point in the second set and rallied from a set down to defeat Huang Dongping/Li Wenmei of China 21-11, 21-23, 15-21 in 73 minutes.
Polii/Rahayu will face a stern test in the finals as they will meet No. 1 seeds Chen Qingchen/Jia Yifan China on Sunday.
