Basel: Malaysia’s men’s singles challenge in the Swiss Open badminton tournament ended after both Soong Joo Ven, Iskandar Zulkarnain were knocked out by their respective opponents in the second round on Thursday.
Soong was defeated by No. 4 seed Suppanyu Avihingsanon of Thailand 22-20, 21-14 in 42 minutes while Jan Jorgensen of Denmark saw off the spirited, and really serious challenge of Iskandar Zulkarnain at the St. Jakobshalle stadium clash on Wednesday, winning 21-19, 21-18.
The Swiss Open is Jorgensen’s first individual international tournament in nearly eight months after his heel injury has sent him out of the top 100 ranking where he was World No. 2 a year ago. He will meet No. 4 seed Suppanyu Avihingsanon of Thailand next.
In men’s doubles, Malaysia’s Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik managed to up their performance by upsetting No. 8 seeds Mark Lamsfuss/Marvin Emil Seidel of Germany 21-19, 21-15 in 29 minutes. Chia/Soh will take on Tinn Isriyanet/Kittisak Namdash of Thailand on Friday.
Men’s doubles top seeders Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen of Denmark also enjoy an easy passage as they outlasted Francis Alwin and Kidambi Nandagopal of India with 21-14, 21-13 in half an hour. The Denmark pair will meet compatriots Kasper Antonsen/Niclas Nohr in the quarter-finals.
