Former national badminton player Indra Gunawan passed away on Sunday morning, succumbing to the intestinal cancer he battled over the past two years.
He was 61.
According to Dewi Mirida, Indra’s wife, the former national trainer insisted to be taken home last week despite undergoing radiation therapy at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital.
After going into a seizure on Thursday, Indra was rushed back to the hospital, this time to Pantai Indah Kapuk Hospital near their home.
But his condition only worsened over the weekend.
“He looked very peaceful,” said Dewi, who was with her husband in his last days.
She added that Indra had “even wanted to seek acupuncture therapy from a shinse [Chinese physician].”
Indra is survived by Dewi and their three children.
His remains lie at the Atmajaya Mortuary. Interment is scheduled on Thursday at Pondok Rangon in East Jakarta.
Born on Sept. 23, 1947, Indra had a stellar career, winning the Asian Games gold medal in men’s doubles in 1970 and the Asian Championship in 1971.
He was also part of the Thomas Cup squad that played in 1970 and 1973.
