SINGAPORE: Quarter-final action from the Aviva Singapore Open brought some major upsets.
Singapore’s only players left in the competition – the men’s doubles pair Hendri Kurniawan and Hendra Wijaya – are out.
The pair lost to Indonesia’s Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan in three sets: 20-22, 21-17, 21-18.
In the women’s singles, second seed Wang Yihan from China was outclassed by her fellow country woman Jiang Yanjiao.
Jiang, who is ranked 21 in the world, beat World No. 3 Wang, 21-17, 21-11, to move into the semi-finals.
Another upset in the men’s singles involved third seed Sony Dwi Kuncoro. The Indonesian lost to Korea’s Park Sung Hwan, 21-19, 21-15.
In another men’s singles quarter-final tie, it took China’s Chen Jin an hour to overcome Denmark’s Jan O Jorgensen 15-21, 21-17, 21-18 to enter the semi-finals.
Other results from the men’s singles – Thailand’s Boonsak Ponsana is through to the next round. The Thai beat India’s Anup Sridhar, 21-11, 21-8 and will meet Korea’s Park Sung Hwan in the semis.
Joining him in Saturday’s semi-finals will be China’s Bao Chunlai, who will play fellow Chinese Chen Jin.
In the quarter-finals, Bao defeated Vietnam’s Nguyen Tien Minh, who had earlier beaten World No. 1, Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei.
The other women’s semi-finalist will be China’s Xie Xingfang, who beat her Thai opponent Salakjit Ponsana in straight sets.
Xie will take on Jiang Yanjiao, while top seed Zhou Mi from Hong Kong will take on China’s Wang Lin in the last 4.
Zhou booked her semi-final berth after beating Netherlands’ Judith Meulendijks, 23-21, 21-17.
