Kuala Lumpur: One week after he handed the World No. 1 position to the Commonwealth Games silver medalist Kidambi Srikanth of India, reigning World champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark was back to the top of the latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) world rankings released on Thursday.
In this week’s world ranking calculation, Kidambi fell four places to World No. 5 after the total points he earned at the 2017 Singapore Open Superseries was removed. The 25-year-old Srikanth reached the final at that tournament last year and was able to collect 7800 points through that achievement.
Meanwhile, Lee Chong Wei and Lin Dan remained in the No. 7 and No. 8 spots respectively.
In women’s singles, as reported by BadmintonPlanet.com yesterday, Akane Yamaguchi of Japan overtook Taiwan’s Tai Tzu Ying, becoming the first ever Japanese women’s singles player to claim the World No. 1 spot with total point of 87411 and having followed closely by Tai who slipped to the second place with 87109 points.
Indonesia’s Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo remained in the number one position for the men’s doubles rankings, followed by Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen of Denmark and Liu Cheng/Zhang Nan of China.
The women’s doubles witnessed no changes in the top 7 with Chen Qingchen/Jia Yifan of China leading the category with 84,682 points.
Meanwhile, Wang Yilyu/Huang Dongping of China continued to stay atop the mixed doubles rankings with their teammate Zheng Siwei/Chen Qingchen right behind them.
