Kuala Lumpur: The Chief Operations Officer of Badminton Asia, Kenny Goh, said that his organization has requested Badminton World Federation (BWF) for the final decision or at least an explanation with regards to the match-fixing scandal involving two Malaysian professional badminton players.
“This case has attracted a lot of attention, we don’t know why BWF are taking so long to come up with a verdict,” said Goh.
“I am sure BWF have their own reasons on why they would like to remain silent on the case thus far, but they should at least explain what’s the hold-up,” added Goh.
“Badminton Asia has no idea about the progress of the whole issue, because BWF have been communicating directly with Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) or even to the two players involved. Regardless, we are hoping for explanations from BWF.”
Malaysian media NSTP Sport has reported that due to the uncertainty, at least one of the players accused in the scandal has begun to experience financial difficulty since their suspension in January 2018. That player has lost his main source of income after being dropped from his sponsors due to the allegation.
The two Malaysian shuttlers who alleged to be involved in match-fixing, attended a BWF hearing in Singapore and were facing six charges of match-fixing from six tournaments between 2013-2016. They could be banned for life if they are found guilty.
