World: Malaysia’s Rio Olympic mixed doubles silver medalists Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying got the better of the Indonesian pair Ricky Karandasuwardi/Debby Susanto 21-17, 21-17 on Thursday to set up a quarter-final battle against another Indonesian pair of Yantoni Edy Saputra/Marsheilla Gischa Islami at the 2018 Australian Open.
Meanwhile, the top seeded mixed doubles pair, Goh Soon Huat/Shevon Jemie Lai whom also from Malaysia, continued their good run in the tournament as they stormed into the quarter-finals of the BWF Super 300 tournament in Sydney. Goh/Lai needed 39 minutes to assert their supremacy over their juniors unseeded Chen Tang Jie/Peck Yen Wei with a 21-10, 21-18 win.
Next up for Goh/Lai will be No. 8 seeds Wang Zekang/Li Yinhui of China.
In men’s singles, India’s No. 2 seed Sai Praneeth has lived up to his billing and registered straight game victory over Indonesia’s Panji Ahmad Maulana 21-12 21-14, while another Indian shuttler the No. 4 seed Sameer Verma overcame Takuma Ueda of Japan 21-16, 21-12 on Thursday.
Praneeth will next play seventh seed Lee Cheuk Yiu of Hong Kong, while Verma will be up against China’s Lu Guangzu.
Malaysia’s challenge in the men’s competition ended in the second round where Chong Wei Feng, Cheam June Wei, and Chong Yee Han were defeated by their opponents respectively.
