Fullerton: World No. 95 Lu Guangzu became the only Chinese men’s singles player left at the US Open, as he advanced to the quarterfinals of the US Open after defeating No. 5 seed Suppanyu Avihingsanon of Thailand 18-21, 22-20, 21-17 in the World Tour Super 300 tournament.
Lu will face another Thai player, the No. 4 seed Khosit Phetpradab next.
In women’s competition, the London Olympic gold medalist Li Xuerui survived a stern examination by Japanese and No. 2 seed Sayaka Sato in the first set. Sato was able to level the score at 20-20 before Li staged a last-ditch escape to survive against Sato with a 22-20 win in the first set.
Sato was clearly demoralized in the second set as she gave up control and lost the momentum she had in the first set to go down 9-21 to Li in the second set.
Li will meet No. 7 seed Kim Hyo Min of Korea on Friday.
