FORMER World and Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat is bored with the World Championships, a tournament he has labeled as just another Super Series event.

"It’s nothing more than just another tournament. I believe other shuttlers will agree with me. The world meet has lost its glamour because it’s held every year," said Taufik in Johor Baru yesterday.Taufik Hidayat feels the World Championships should be a biennial affair.

"The World Championships should have its own defining status. It should be something special, both for the players and fans."

The World Championships used to be a biennial event the Badminton World Federation (BWF) decided to organise it annually from 2005 onwards in hope of popularising the sport.

Taufik, however, believes otherwise.

"People are beginning to lose interest in the sport. It should be reverted to once every two years.

"As for me, my interest has lessened under the current circumstances. There’s nothing much in it.

"BWF should seriously look into this matter. I have raised this before but the federation turned a deaf ear."

This year’s world championships will be held in Hyderabad, India on Aug 10-16.

Taufik was shown the door in the RM425,000 Yonex-Sunrise Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold, when the second seed lost 21-14, 20-22, 21-19 to China’s Chen Long yesterday.

"I did not play too well today (yesterday). I’m not giving excuses for the defeat as I failed in every aspect of the game.

"I will go home and prepare for the world meet," said the 28-year-old Indonesian.
