Ipoh: The World No. 105 Selvaduray Kisona overcame muscle cramps to win the women’s singles gold medal at the 19th Malaysia Games (SUKMA).
Kisona who represented the state of Negeri Sembilan, was about to retire at the end of the decider after lying down several times due to the pain occurred in her leg and thigh.
However, she told reporters that she decided to keep going after she heard her mom chanting and supporting her from the supporters’ seat.
“My mom was screaming to motivate me to continue fighting. I’m happy to finish the game with a victory,” said Kisona.
The No. 3 seed Kisona fought her heart out and won the match against Lee Ying Ying of Perak 25-27, 21-18, 21-19 in an 85-minute fierce battle.
In men’s singles final, Penang’s Tan Jia Wei proved his greatness by easing past Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin from Selangor with 21-16 and 21-19 to claim the gold medal.
“I am happy and delighted to win in this big event,” said Tan after the match.
The Sukma Games (Malaysian Games) is a biannual national multi-sport event involving young athletes from Malaysian 13 member states and the Federal territory.
