Vietnam’s top badminton player Nguyen Tien Minh is the second seed for the US$120,000 Bingo Bonanza Philippine Open Grand Prix Badminton Championships, which opened on June 30.
Minh, ranked 13th in the world, will enter the competition in the quarter-finals.
He has already defeated the world’s No 1 player Lee Chong Wei, of Malaysia, in the third round of the Singapore Open earlier this month, and is expected to meet Hong Kong’s Yun Hu, world No 67, in the quarter-finals.
If Minh reaches the final, he is likely to meet Hong Kong’s Chan Yan Kit, who is seeded No 1 or No 3 seed Malaysian Lee Tsuen Seng.
The six-day tournament, which attracts top shuttlers from across the world, is in the Philsports Arena (formerly ULTRA), Pasig City.
The annual 4-star tournament was cancelled last year because of the Olympics in Beijing, where Minh became the first Vietnamese badminton player to compete as an Olympian.
