Kuala Lumpur： Malaysia’s World No. 22 men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik are ready to step up in wake of World No. 14 Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong’s possible departure from Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).
Earlier this week, Malaysia’s mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying have left the Malaysian national team and the Rio 2016 Olympic men’s doubles silver medalist Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong were also expected to follow the move.
While still unconfirmed whether Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong would 100% be leaving BAM, Chia/Soh are ready to step up in place of Goh/Tan.
“We are ready at any time,” said Chia.
“If Goh/Tan really leave BAM, the quality of our sparring partners will be somewhat lower, but we have no control over this.”
The president of BAM, Norza Zakaria also said that the organization would not keep players that have intention of leaving the national team.
“We have made it clear that BAM is moving towards nurturing a group of young players,” said Zakaria.
“At BAM always want the players to choose what’s best for them. We’ll let them go if that’s what they are looking for.”
Since winning the 2016 BWF Super series finals, Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong have gone two years withoutany titles. Nevertheless, they are still Malaysia’s best bet to win a medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
