Lee Chong Wei eyes competitive return at Malaysia Open

Kuala Lumpur: Making his long-awaited return after a successful early stage nose cancer treatment, Malaysia’s badminton legend – Lee Chong Wei is aiming to compete at the Malaysia Open that will be held in Axiata Arena, Kuala Lumpur, from April 2 to April 7.

However, Lee still couldn’t complete the full training routine despite feeling that was healthy enough. He was practicing on the badminton court for 1 hour and 15 minutes on Monday before going to gym for his fitness workout.

“Right now, I am just slowly regaining my muscle mass and improving my feeling on the court. My movements were good. I hope that after one or two weeks, I can return to the usual training intensity,” said Lee.

Lee who has won Malaysia Open 12th times, said he would go back to Taiwan next month for the next round of medical check-up, and to seek advice from doctors before deciding whether he would play in Malaysia Open.

“I will try my best to play at the Malaysia Open. BAM have registered my name for the tournament, but I have to go back to Taiwan in March to seek the advice from my doctors first.”

“If my doctors give me the green light, I will be playing at the Malaysia Open.”

Malaysia Open will be Lee’s international tournament in about nine-month after he lost to Kento Momota in the 2018 Indonesia Open semi-final last July before going to Taiwan for his cancer treatment.
