Copenhagen: Defending champions Denmark have advanced to the semi-final of the 2019 European Mixed Team Championships after thumping Spain 5-0 at Frederiksberg Hallerne on Friday.
In the first match, Denmark’s World No. 14 mixed doubles pair Mathias Christiansen/Christinna Pedersen breezed past Lorena Usle/Alberto Zapico 21-11, 21-11 to put Denmark up 1-0 in the tie.
The World No. 24 men’s singles player Rasmus Gemke had to dig deep to overcame Luis Enrique Penalver 12-21, 21-16, 21-13 in 68 minutes to score the second point for Denmark.
In women’s singles action Mia Blichfeldt recorded another Danish win, seeing off Sara Penalver 21-11, 21-14 to seal the tie.
David Daugaard/Frederik Søgaard and Julie Dawall Jakobsen/Rikke Soby then battled past their opponents in men’s doubles and women’s doubles respectively to provide the hosts a clean sweep over Spain with 5-0.
Elsewhere in Group One, the Netherlands beat France 4-1.
Denmark will play Netherlands again on Saturday for a berth in the final.
In Group Two, 2017 runners-up Russia picked up a 4-1 victory over Ireland and will meet Germany whom they defeated on Thursday in the semi-final.
