Copenhagen: Defending champions Denmark defeated ‘dark horse’ Germany 3-0 to claim the 2019 European Mixed Team Championships at Frederiksberg Hallerne on Sunday.
It was a well-deserved victory for the Danes, who demonstrated consistency and discipline to win all their ties since the group stages.
Mathias Christiansen/Christinna Pedersen opened Denmark’s campaign on Sunday with a convincing win over Isabel Herttrich/Mark Lamsfuss of Germany in the mixed doubles match. The German pair was leading early but Christiansen/Pedersen managed to level the score at 7-7 in both sets to claim the match 21-12, 21-12 in just 36 minutes.
Anders Antonsen put Denmark 1 match away from victory after needing only 34 minutes to dispose of Max Weisskirchen 21-9, 21-13 in the men’s singles match.
“Anders was much faster today, he played better than me,” said Weisskirchen after the match.
Line Højmark Kjaersfeldt put on a scintillating performance to help Denmark lift the title with a 21-16, 21-17 win over Yvonne Li of Germany in 36 minutes.
“I am very happy. We were the favorites to win, and we did a really good job this week, winning confidently. I am proud of the team,” said Kjaersfeldt.
“I was a tough and long but it was a great week for us. I couldn’t cope with Kjaersfeldt, but I am happy that we were able to reach the final,” said Yvonne Li after the match.
