PV Sindhu meets India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi after her historic gold at World Championships

New Delhi: PV Sindhu, who defeated Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara 21-7, 21-7 last Sunday in a one-sided women’s singles final and to become the first Indian to win gold at BWF World Championships, met India Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday.

After meeting Sindhu, PM Modi tweeted “India’s pride, a champion who has brought home a Gold and lots of glory! Happy to have met @Pvsindhu1. Congratulated her and wished her the very best for her future endeavours.”

Earlier Tuesday, Sindhu also met with India’s Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju and was presented a Rs 10 lakh (USD $14K) check from the minister himself.

Talking to Indian media, Sindhu was extremely proud and excited for winning her first World title.

“I am happy about this, because, I’ve been waiting for this for a while,” said Sindhu.

“I had two bronze, and two silver, and finally 2019 a gold. It’s a proud moment for me as well as the country.”

“When I was standing there on the podium, I couldn’t express that feeling because there was a lot of emotions going through my mind, because there’s the flag was flight high and the national was being played, it’s definitely a very proud moment for me,” added Sindhu.

“This will give me a strong confidence boost for many tournaments ahead.”
