Taipei: Malaysia’s mixed doubles pair, Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying fought from a set down and to take the next two by beating Rinov Rivaldy/Pitha Haningtyas Mentari of Indonesia 18-21, 21-14, 21-14 in the Chinese Taipei Open quarter-finals on Friday.
After the match, Goh expressed dissatisfaction with their performance since the first round.
“It may be because we have played too many tournaments in order to collect enough points to go to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but our opponents will definitely want to give it a 100 percent when playing against us,” said Goh.
Goh admitted their performance has been in decline recently, but they were aiming to go as far as possible in the tournament.
“Hope we can play better in the semi-final tomorrow because the previous three matches have been disappointing,” added Goh.
The No. 1 seeds Chan/Goh are set to face No. 4 seeds Tang Chun Man/Tse Ying Suet of Hong Kong on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Malaysian team has experienced mixed results in men’s doubles as Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong managed to battle past Kim Gi Jung/Lee Yong Dae of Korea 21-18, 21-19 to set up a semi-final showdown with Mathias Boe/Mads Conrad-Petersen of Denmark.
On the other hand, men’s doubles No. 3 seeds Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik were no match for unseeded Choi Solgyu/Seo Seung Jae as they went down 18-21, 14-21 in 32 minutes.
In men’s singles, home shuttler and heavy favorite Chou Tien Chen had to dig deep to rally from behind to beat Malaysian player Cheam June Wei 21-11, 15-21, 21-17 to set up a last four battle with Shesar Hiren Rhustavito of Indonesia.
