Odense: World No. 1 Kento Momota defeated World No. 5 Chen Long of China 21-14, 21-12 in Denmark Open final to win his fifth consecutive BWF World Tour title and his ninth BWF World Tour tile of the year in 2019 on Sunday.
The victory was also one of Momota’s phenomenal winning streak, picking up his 26 straight victories since losing to Huang Yu Xiang of China in the 2019 Indonesia Open second round on July 18, 2019.
After Sunday’s victory, Momota has tied the career meeting record with Chen Long to 5-5. Chen last defeated Momota was at the 2018 French Open semi-final, and that was Chen’s last title in nearly a year. The Denmark Open was also Chen’s third runner-up finish of 2019.
In their fifth face off in the final of BWF World Tour tournaments in 2019, World No. 1 Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo completely destroyed compatriots and World No. 2 Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan in the Denmark Open final in just 28 minutes with 21-14, 21-13.
“We are happy to win. It is not easy for us to defend the title here. Because the opponents here are all strong. This is a blessing for us,” said Gideon.
“We are happy because some tournaments can be all Indonesian finals. I hope it continues like this,” said Sukamuljo.
“In today’s game we enjoyed the game and we did our best,” added Sukamuljo.
Meanwhile, Mohammad Ahsan remained calm after the loss to the World No. 1 pair.
“They look good as usual. We were under a lot of pressure from them since the beginning,” said Ahsan.
