Paris: Indonesian shuttler Anthony Sinisuka Ginting progressed to the French Open men’s singles semifinal with a straight-game win over World No. 1 Kento Momota of Japan on Friday.
In a clinical display, the 23-year-old Ginting who was born in Cimahi, Indonesia, outlasted Momota 21-10, 21-19 in 43 minutes to make the semifinal. Ginting will take on Chen Long of China next.
Chen Long who defeated Lin Dan in the second round, seeing off Shesar Hiren Rhustavito of Indonesia 21-19, 21-12 to advance to the last four.
Jonatan Christie and Viktor Axelsen will play each other in another men’s singles semi-final.
In women’s singles, World No. 1 Tai Tzu Ying overcame a back injury she sustained in the second set, edging past reigning World champion PV Sindhu of India 21-16, 24-26, 21-17.
Tai will meet Carolina Marin of Spain next, while Korea’s An Se Young earned an opportunity to battle former World No. 1 Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in another women’s singles semi-final.
India’s World No. 11 Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty continued their strong run of the tournament, taking down World No. 8 Kim Astrup/Anders Skaarup Rasmussen of Denmark 21-13, 22-20 to face World No. 6 Hiroyuki Endo/Yuta Watanabe on Saturday.
Meanwhile, World No. 1 men’s pair Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo were on course for their second consecutive title in two weeks when they face Liao Min Chun/Su Ching Heng of Taiwan in the final four.
