Tokyo: Japan’s World No. 1 men’s singles player Kento Momota and World No. 4 men’s pair Takeshi Kamura/Keigo Sonoda attended the opening ceremony of 2019 Japan national badminton tournament on Monday, and the 25-year-old Momota was upbeat about winning the Japan national champion title this year.
“I don’t have many opportunities to play in Japan and in front of Japanese fans. I hope to play a good tournament to please and thanks the support from the Japanese fans by defending the national championships,” said Momota.
For Momota, who are currently the highest ranked men’s singles player in the world, being able to win the title on his home turf is going to be a very special experience for him as well.
“This is one of the titles I want to win. As Japan’s top players, I understand I could bring great impact for the sport in Japan. Therefore, I want to go all out to win the game,” added Momota.
Momota first won the Japan national champion in 2015, he defeated Kenta Nishimoto in three-set to win the title in 2018.
