Soo Teck Zhi enters Syed Modi International quarters

Lucknow: The 2013 Asian junior boys’ singles champion Soo Tech Zhi’s strong run at Syed Modi International badminton championships has continued with a second round win over B. R. Sankeerth of Canada 21-9, 21-11 in just 34 minutes.

The World No. 71 Malaysian who pulled off a huge upset to beat World No. 6 Shi Yuqi of China in the first round, will play World No. 22 Wang Tzu Wei of Taiwan in the final 8.

Korea’s No. 7 seed Son Wan Ho also advanced to the quarter-finals by easing past India’s Lakshya Sen 21-14, 21-17 to face Indian player and No. 3 seed Kidambi Srikanth next.

The three-time World Junior Champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand managed to overcome India’s No. 4 seed Sai B. Praneeth 21-11, 21-17 to set up a quarter-final match with Sourabh Verma.

In women’s singles, South Korea’s 17-year-old rising star An Se Young however lost to teammate, Kim Ga Eun, going down 13-21, 11-21, while Spanish Olympic champion Carolina Marin defeated Korean player Sim Yu Jin 19-21, 21-13, 21-11 to set up meeting with Russia’s Evgeniya Kosetskaya next.
