Shevon Jemie Lai discharged from hospital

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s mixed doubles star who fell ill just two days after the Hari Raya or Eid celebration, was worried that she contracted COVID-19.

“I felt very uncomfortable, and went to see the doctor because I rather be safe than sorry especially during the coronavirus pandemic,” said Lai.

“Fortunately, after some medical testing, I was diagnosed with dengue fever,” added Lai.

“However, dengue fever is equally deadly, I am relieved that I have recovered from it, but my liver is still a little inflamed as the result of the illness,” explained Lai.

Lai who was supposed to join the Malaysian national badminton squad to begin training under the Road to Tokyo (RTT) program on June 1, 2020, had to re-schedule her return to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) on June 15th.

“I started having a fever on May 26. Everything was fine until I woke up from a nap and my body started aching and my fever continued. I was originally worried that I was infected by the coronavirus,” said Lai.

“I was then diagnosed with dengue fever, and was admitted to hospital on May 28.”

“I feel normal now, but it takes a while for my body to recover. My training hits bump in the road due to the dengue fever, but I am looking forward to resuming my training soon.”

Her mixed doubles partner, Goh Soon Huat was being very understanding of the situation and had said to Malaysian media that he was willing to stand by her and wait for her patiently so that she could have enough rest and return to training in good spirit.

Lai left the hospital 5 days ago. She and her partner Goh Soon Huat are now ranked World No. 12.
