Basel: Denmark’s World No. 2 men’s singles player Viktor Axelsen will take on World No. 25 Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand in Sunday’s Swiss Open final.
Both players won two very similar semi-finals on Saturday as Axelsen defeated Kidambi Srikanth 21-13, 21-19 while Kunlavut Vitidsarn absolutely overpowering Malaysia’s World No. 11 Lee Zii Jia 21-18, 21-10.
“Srikanth’s attacks were good in the second set, and I lifted way too short. But I am really happy I managed to win,” said Axelsen after the match.
“It’s great to be in the final, I look forward to it tomorrow,” added Axelsen.
Going into the final, Axelsen got the upper hand with a 2-0 career victory against Kunlavut. However, the 19-year-old Thai player has shown he is the badminton’s rising star and could put up a good battle against Axelsen.
In men’s doubles, Malaysia’s No. 1 seeds Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik gave a strong fight but ultimately falling 13-21, 21-13, 16-21 to unseeded Mark Lamsfuss/Marvin Seidel of Germany in 52 minutes.
“It was a good win and good performance from us, we are looking into the final,” said Seidel.
“We played some steep smashes and slices, and worked hard. And if they get the feeling that their defense is not good enough, then they started to struggle a lot. As we know, Malaysian players have a strong defense, if it doesn’t work, then they struggle,” added Seidel.
Mark Lamsfuss/Marvin Seidel will take on No. 6 seeds Kim Astrup/Anders Skaarup Rasmussen of Denmark in the final.
