Basel: Viktor Axelsen of Denmark continued his dominance at the Swiss Open by overwhelming the 19-year-old Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand to win the men’s title on Sunday.
Top seed Axelsen won 21-16, 21-6 to claim his second Swiss Open title. He also won his first Swiss Open in 2014, in which he defeated Tian Houwei of China 21-7, 16-21, 25-23.
“I am very happy to win the Swiss Open for the second time in my career,” said Axelsen.
“I got off to a good start in the second game, and I managed to cruise my way to the second game, which was really nice,” added Axelsen.
Although fans were expecting a nail-biter in the clash between No. 1 seed Carolina Marin of Spain and No. 2 seed PV Sindhu of India in the women’s singles final, however, the match ended as a blowout. Marin needed only 35 minutes to ease past Sindhu 21-12, 21-5 for the title.
“I feel really happy today, it was one of my best games,” said Marin.
“Actually, on Tuesday, I injured my soleus, I thought it was broken, and I couldn’t play this tournament,” explained Marin.
“I was really scared when started on Wednesday against Perminova. I told myself just give it a try, if everything was ok, then I would just keep going,” added Marin.
“Finally, I was able to win the tournament, and I feel really happy,” said Marin.
In men’s doubles, Germany’s Mark Lamsfuss/Marvin Seidel dream run at the Swiss Open ended in defeat when they lost to No. 6 seeds Kim Astrup/Anders Skaarup Rasmussen of Denmark 16-21, 11-21.
