Chong Wei Wins 9th Consecutive National GP Title

KUALA TERENGGANU, Feb 21  — Datuk Lee Chong Wei lived up to his top billing by winning his ninth consecutive National Grand Prix Finals title, after beating Mohamad Arif Abdul Latif 21-15, 21-16 at the State Stadium here Monday night.

Chong Wei, unbeaten on the local circuit since 2003 and who has won eight straight national crowns, has previously stated that he would want to make it a perfect 10 on the local scene before stepping aside to allow younger players to taste success.

The world number one picked up RM7,000 for his effort in front of about 2,000 fans.

In the women’s singles final, Tee Jing Yi upset Sonia Cheah Suya 14-21, 21-15, 21-14 in three sets while Tan Boon Heong/Chin Eei Hui edged Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying to clinch the mixed doubles title.

There was another upset in the men’s doubles when scratch pair Hoon Thien How/Tan Boon Heong beat Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari/Ong Soon Hock 21-14, 10-21, 21-19 in three sets.

The women’s doubles final saw Ng Poau Leng/Woon Khe Wei emerge victorious after beating Chong Sook Chin/Goh Liu Ying 21-18, 21-10.
