BAM Appoints Lee Meng Yean As Women’s Doubles Coach

Kuala Lumpur: Lee Meng Yean, the World No. 11 women’s doubles player (with Chow Mei Kuan) who quit the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) on Jan 29, 2022, has made a surprise career move to become a coach.

In a statement published by BAM on Friday, Lee was named one of the coaches in the BAM women’s doubles department alongside Hoon Thien How.

“Meng Yean was the skipper of the Uber Cup 2020 team and competed at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. The former national shuttler is set to strengthen the coaching department alongside Hoon Thien How,” said BAM in a statement.

Lee was the captain of Malaysia’s Uber 2020 Cup squad and competed in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with Chow Mei Kuan. Lee and Chow are technically still the highest-ranked Malaysian women’s doubles pair in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings.

Before BAM’s announcement on Friday, Lee told Malaysian media The Star that she and Chow would not be competing as a pair.

“Mei Kuan has no intention of coming out of retirement, and we are not making a comeback,” said Lee.

Lee and Chow were the winners of 2012, 2016 Malaysia International, they also won the 2018 Syed Modi International.
