Basel: Two Malaysian mixed doubles pairs will meet each other on Saturday to fight for a ticket to the Swiss Open final. The World No. 10 Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing saved a match-point in the second set, claiming the quarter-final victory over World No. 14 Mathias Christiansen/Alexandra Bøje of Denmark 11-21, 22-20, 21-15 on Friday.
Tan/Lai will take on compatriots and World No. 13 Goh Soon Huat/Shevon Jemie Lai next. Goh/Lai got a relatively easy match in the quarter-finals as they overcame William Villeger/Anne Tran of France 21-17, 21-12.
In men’s doubles, Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik’s hopes of winning their first BWF World Tour title were still alive after the second seeds beat No. 7 seeds Mark Lamsfuss/Marvin Seidel of Germany 21-11, 21-13 in the Swiss Open quarter-finals.
The World No. 8 Chia/Soh will meet World No. 9 Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto of Indonesia in the semi-finals.
Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto on the other hand, survived a huge challenge from Malaysia’s World No. 11 Ong Yew Sin/Teo Ee Yi to edge past Ong/Teo 21-12, 9-21, 22-20.
After dropping the first game 18-21, the 2022 German Open men’s doubles champions Goh Sze Fei/Nur Izzuddin fought back from 15-19 down in the second game to successfully force a decider by clinching the second game 21-19 against World No. 26 Leo Rolly Carnando/Daniel Marthin of Indonesia. The World No. 18 Goh/Izzuddin found their rhythm in the third game to ultimately defuse Carnando/Marthin 21-12 in the decider to reach the semi-finals.
Goh/Izzuddin will play another Indonesian pair – World No. 23 Pramudya Kusumawardana/Yeremia Erich Yoche Yacob Rambitan for a spot in the final.
In women’s doubles, World No. 44 Vivian Hoo/Lim Chiew Sien created an upset in a pulsating quarter-final encounter against World No. 20 Ashwini Ponnappa/Reddy N. Sikki of India, beating the Indian pair 22-20, 23-21 and will meet No. 3 seeds Gabriela Stoeva/Stefani Stoeva of Bulgaria in the semi-finals.
The women’s singles quarter-finals saw Malaysia’s Kisona Selvaduray was under constant pressure by Supanida Katethong of Thailand, as the Malaysian lost 11-21, 12-21 to her Thai opponent.
