Taipei: Tai Tzu Ying continued to rule the Badminton World Federation (BWF) women’s singles category after BWF published its latest rankings on April 19th, with the Taiwanese firmly entrenched at the top a with a record-extending 212th week as the World No. 1 and with a total of 108,800 ranking points.
However, Tai is at risk of losing her World No. 1 ranking to Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi, as the Japanese only trailed Tai by 51 points with a total of 108,749 ranking points.
Chen Yufei, the Tokyo Olympics gold medalist, accumulated a total of 102,454 points and she remained in third place.
Since Tai will not be participating in the upcoming Badminton Asia Championships that will be held in Manila, from April 26 to May 1, Yamaguchi is expected to overtake Tai as the new World No. 1 after the Badminton Asia Championships.
Even so, Tai Tzu-Ying has said that she’s not too concerned about the world rankings.
“It’s natural to change people when the time comes. I really don’t care about the rankings so much, just focus on myself,” said Tai.
In addition, according to the BWF regulations, players with higher rankings have the right to choose the color of the jersey they want to wear during a match. But as usual, that did not bother Tai at all.
“If I am no longer the World No. 1, and when I meet a player with a higher ranking than me, I’ll just go and change my clothes,” said Tai.
