CHONG Wei Feng didn’t let his good start in the Japan Open go to waste as he set up a quarter-final showdown with Lee Chong Wei in Tokyo yesterday.
Wei Feng, who toppled local favourite Kenichi Tago in the first round, defeated Ajay Jayaram of India 21-16, 21-16 while Chong Wei secured a 21-10, 21-12 victory over Viktor Axelsen of Denmark in the second round.
Men’s doubles Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong celebrated their continued existence as a pair by crushing Thailand’s Patiphat Chalardchalaem-Nipitphon Puangpuapech 21-8, 21-7 to advance to the last eight.
They will meet Naoki Kawamae-Shoji Sato of Japan, who Kien Keat-Boon Heong beat in the London Olympics group stage, today.
Kien Keat-Boon Heong’s chances of winning the tournament look good after Danes Mathias Boe-Cartsen Mogensen — the only top four pair competing — were beaten 16-21, 21-13, 21-19 by Indonesians Yonathan Dasuki-Hendra Gunawan.
Tan Wee Kiong-Hoon Thien How reached the last eight after beating Chris Adcock-Andrew Ellis of England 21-11, 21-14 and will take on Hirokatsu Hashimoto-Noriyasu Hirat of Japan next.
Wee Kiong also reached the last of the mixed doubles with Ng Hui Lin after the pair defeated Maneepong Jongjit-Savitree Amitrapai of Thailand 21-12, 21-15 while Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying advanced with a 21-17, 21-16 win over Noriyasu Hirata-Miyuki Maeda of Japan.
