Taipei: In the world of badminton, the upcoming 2023 World Championships hold a bittersweet significance for the former World No. 1 women’s singles player Tai Tzu Ying of Taiwan.
The current World No. 4 shuttler has revealed that this championship marks her swan song on the World Championships stage.
Tai who emerged as the undisputed queen of badminton during the 2020 Tokyo Olympic cycle, lost to formidable adversary – Chen Yufei from China in the final, leaving her with a hard-fought runner-up title.
Despite her exceptional talent, Tai Tzu Ying’s pursuit of a world championship title remains unfulfilled. The passage of time and a shifting landscape has seen her relinquish the throne she once dominated, making way for rising stars like Akane Yamaguchi of Japan and An Se Young of Korea.
With only seven appearances in BWF World Tour tournaments this season (Malaysia Open, All England, Singapore Open, Indonesia Open, Taipei Open, Korea Open, and Japan Open), Tai Tzu Ying only ranked No. 15 in the BWF Race to Finals Rankings, and she recognized the urgency to secure her berth at the year-end event.
Standing with 53,600 points in the year-end tournament, she is determined to finish in the top 8 and qualify for the event. Acknowledging the competitive landscape, she admits the necessity of participating in more upcoming tournaments to secure her spot.
“I thought I was already playing many tournaments, but other competitors are competing in even more tournaments than I am,” said Tai.
In the coming week, Tai Tzu Ying will be competing at the 2023 BWF World Championships which will be held from 21 to 27 August 2023 in Royal Arena, Copenhagen, Denmark.
This will serve as the last World Championships to Tai’s storied career, punctuating years of dedication and excellence. After the World Championships, she is set to play at the China Open and the Hong Kong Open in September.
